1st Grade ReligionOur consumable book for Religion is Our Sunday Visitor: Call to Faith series. The students will be completing chapters in the book, doing projects, and memorizing prayers. A chapter test will be completed at the end of each chapter. We will complete the chapter review together in class the day before the chapter test. Students will be taking their books home that night to review for the test. Chapter tests will always be on the assignment notebook the night before the test as a reminder. Music and song is a big part of first grade Religion. We will be using the Call to Faith music CD and also God Loves Me: Calling Children to Faith Through Song DVD by John Burland. These songs align with many catechetical themes. We will also be using "Promise" weekly magazines every Friday to discuss the Sunday Gospel.

Weekly Mass Reflections |
We began a Mass Attendance Initiative a few years ago and we will be continuing it this year. First grade students will be expected to complete a Sunday Mass Reflection Sheet over the weekend. It will be sent home every Friday and it is due on Monday or the first day of the school week. Each week a different item in church will be listed on the sheet. Please complete the sheet with the date (Saturday evening or Sunday), name of the priest presiding over mass, name of the church, and the mass you attended. While at Sunday mass please show your child the item listed, talk about it, and have them draw a picture and write a sentence about it on their Mass Reflection Sheet. ALL students are expected to complete a reflection sheet. If they do not attend mass that weekend simply say “did not attend”. Your child should still complete the sheet by drawing a picture and writing a sentence. They will NOT be graded on this reflection except for completion. In other words, your child is expected to turn this form in each week and will receive credit for completing. Please use this reflection form to begin a family discussion of mass, the readings, the liturgical season, etc. Thank you for helping your child complete the weekly Mass Reflection Sheet and participating in their religious education.

Family Prayer Bag |
Each student will have an opportunity to take home the Family Prayer Bag. You will have the prayer kit for a week. It will be sent home on Friday and you will return it on Thursday the following week. The Diocese of Joliet would like to assist you as parents to be the best of teachers and as a family to make your home a domestic church by inviting you to pray together using this prayer kit. Some resources have been provided and some suggestions to help you pray. May this prayer kit be a source of great blessings for you and your child.
There will be 3 items in the prayer kit for you to keep at home: A Short Family Prayer sheet, How to Pray the Rosary sheet, and Family Faith Journal sheet. We encourage you to use these resources to prayer together. The other items in the prayer kit will need to be returned to school. These items are: a Rosary, Divine Mercy Prayer Plaque, Divine Mercy Chaplet Booklet, A Short Guide to Praying as a Family book, and The Heritage of Your Blessings Instructional Journal. You will find a message from Rev. John Belmonte in the instructional journal explaining this prayer kit. Also, in the instrucional journal you will find a suggested schedule for the week. Lastly, in the instructional journal there is an area for your family to record(write or draw) what you have done for the week. God bless you and your family! |
